Lyrical Baritone is an open-ended project celebrating the solo voice of the baritone saxophone. Although historically the baritone has served as a bass voice in wind, jazz, and chamber ensembles, this project aims to showcase the solo possibilities of the baritone in concert music by expanding the repertoire through commissioning original works and by transcribing and arranging master works from other instrumental repertoires. Two additional goals of this project are to record and to publish the music from this project. Multiple volumes will be released on Navona Records (Parma imprint) and the transcriptions will be published by Trevco Music Publishing. Volume I of Lyrical Baritone will be released in January 2025.
In addition to expanding the repertoire, developing lyricism, nuance, and refinement in the extended tenor register (known as the altissimo register) is central to the Lyrical Baritone project. The normal playing range of the baritone is approximately two-and-one-half-octaves, and the music in this collection often ascends beyond that. The list below features works highlighted in the Lyrical Baritone Project over the past few seasons.
